Five Minute English - Japan

Trey Fleming fell in love with the people of Japan a few years back while on an iGo team with students in his youth group. God then led he and his wife to move their family to Osaka, Japan.

Japan has a fascinating culture, amazing technology, and some of the lowest crime rates in the world. But underneath all of Japan’s accomplishments is a sense of loneliness and despair as evidenced by some of the highest suicide rates in the world. Less than 1% of Japanese people say they know Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. That means that if you talked to 200 people out on the streets of Osaka, 1 or 2 of them might know Jesus and the rest would probably have never heard His story before.

One of your main responsibilities as a member of the FLT (Field Leadership Team) is to help lead other teams. The FLT plays a huge part in leading the many teams that will come to Japan for week-long trips throughout the summer. So in addition to ministering to the nationals, you will also be ministering to the team members you are leading. You'll be preparing for their arrival, mentoring them as they minister, and serving them in ways that ensure they have a great experience while they are there.

The primary focus of the week-long teams will be relational evangelism. Some of the things the week-long teams will be doing include: Sharing the Gospel through offering free English lessons, international parties, and university campus outreaches. As an FLT member, you'll be doing all of these same things, and leading others as they engage in those activities.

One of the greatest parts about the FLT trips is the opportunity to serve directly under the missionaries and church planters. The missionaries in Japan, along with the iGo staff and your team leaders, will be overseeing you as you learn to lead others. You truly are considered part of their team while you serve in this capacity and will be learning the ins and outs of what it means to reach a city effectively using short-term teams as part of that strategy.

Trey and his family are excited to invite you to join in this ancient work.

Safety

At iGo, safety is always a high priority and we take extensive measures to ensure the success of the students on our teams. From registering every student with the embassy, to giving all our leaders training, we do everything in our power to minimize risk and be prepared for any issue that might arise on the field.

Cost

The cost for this trip is estimated to be $4800*. It will cover meals, lodging, airfare, training, in country transportation, travel insurance, etc… everything but souvenirs. We provide all team members with a fundraising guide upon acceptance and other helpful resources.

*Due to the volatility of fuel prices and their effect on travel costs, we can not provide the exact cost until closer to the trip dates.

Supervision

Caroline Jacobs is the Trip Coach (staff member in charge of logistics) for this team. She will be your main contact leading up to the trip. This team will also have a Team Leader who will travel and serve with the team. All Team Leaders have a proven track record of responsibility, travel competency, and faithfulness to their church.

Training

The first two days of your trip will be a stateside training program called Base Camp. The two primary focuses of Base Camp are:

  1. Spiritual Preparation: Teachings that will give you a biblical framework for missional living.
  2. Cross Cultural Training: Simulations and activities that will enable you to cross cultures effectively.
